The Fruit de Mer Golf Tour 2016
posted on 28 June 2016
This year the WHELKS took the decision that they did not wish to embark on a Golf Tour. Something that, in the past, was always an important date on our Calendar.
Three intrepid Senior Members, Keith M, Martyn D and Ian F did however take the decision to return to France for a 5 Day, 3 Rounds of Golf tour, in a new location, Normandy. Again a little different given that in the past we have always favoured Brittany.
On the evening of Monday 20th June we embarked on Brittany Ferries MV Normandy from Portsmouth to Caen arriving at 0645 the following morning. We drove to our base, Port-en-Bessin for Breakfast and then to Omaha Beach Golf Club for our 1st Round on the Mer Course.
We started wearing our Rainwear but soon disposed of this by the 4th Hole.
The 6th Hole has not only the most picturesque view of the village of Port en Bessin but also has the Memorial to 47 Commando Royal Marines placed above a German Bunker at the rear of the Green. It allowed us the opportunity to pay our respects to “The Fallen.”
After and interesting Round Ian F had the lowest Gross but, once Handicaps were put in place was 3 Points behind Keith M with Martyn D 3 points further back.
Golf Day 2 saw us at Golf de Caen Golf Club. This is a Championship Course, as we were to find out. Indeed the Course introduction actually states “Le Plaine-Vallon is a competition course where overcoming first tee nerves will make all the difference.
This proved to be very true. An elevated tee with thick rough on either side then deeply wooded. An accurate Drive takes you onto the floor of the Fairway which leaves a reasonable 2nd into the slightly elevated green. From the outset we knew we were in for a hard day at the office playing in 27C heat.
Ian F played a very good Round and found that he had managed to recover and now had a 13 shot lead over Keith E and 20 over Martyn D.
Keith E won the Day and recovered 10 shots on Ian F who ran out the eventual Winner on Stroke Play, our agreed Competition. Had we have played Stableford Keith E would have won overall by 3 Points.
In between the golf we were very comfortably ensconced in the Ibis Hotel at Port en Bessin and managed to share 2 Fruit de Mer and, on the final night went to the Memorial Brasserie to 47 RM Commando and enjoyed a 6 Oyster Starter, Huge Bowls of Mussels cooked with Mushrooms and Roquefort Cheese and finishing with Apple Sorbet soaked in Calvados.
Our journey home allowed us to have a celebratory Dinner on MV Mont St. Michael and finally arrive home at 0100 Saturday morning.
All in all an excellent trip and we hope that next year we can gain more interest and enjoy once again a full WHELKS Tour.
