WHELKS

Sapey Golf Club

Tuesday 18th August saw 11 Members and 3 Guests at Sapey Golf Club for the August Match.

It was a great delight to welcome our Visitors, Mike Richardson, whose company we have enjoyed before and 2 new Visitors, Paul Battle, the erstwhile Secretary of the Worcestershire Provincial Golf Society and Rick Abbotts, who we hope to see as a Member next year.

Bacon Rolls and Coffee having been consumed it was off to the 1st Tee, with our two new Visitors reeling from the fact they could only receive 3/4 of their declared Handicaps. Putting them both on 21.

The various games were played in the usual friendly manner with such banter as appropriate over a course which played very well, but, as usual, the Whelks Handicap system proving a more testing challenge.

Following the customary beer in the Clubhouse we then sat down to an excellent two course meal with coffee and awaited our Captain, Roger Fennel, announcing the results.

Much to his surprise the overall winner was Paul Battle closely followed by Mike Richardson. Once again showing that our Visitors do prosper. Our congratulations go to Paul who now realises that when he hopefully joins us again he will find himself playing off a Handicap of 19.

Our Whelks Winner was our Handicap Secretary, Ian Fothergill, who had just received a cut following his winning the Masefield Lodge Golf Day. Its 9 next time Ian! The cut in his Handicap was softened by the fact that he also took the money for “Closest the Pin” on the Par 3 17th.

Once again an excellent Whelks Day out at Sapey Golf Club and we look forward to our next Game at The Vale on Tuesday 8th September.

Visitors are always welcome so if you are viewing this as a golfer and wish to play please contact Bob Sweeting.

A course which played very well Whelks Winner Handicap Secretary, Ian Fothergill
