Wonderful Weather for WHELKS
posted on 08 July 2015
Monday 22nd June saw the WHELKS Tourists journey to the Manor & Ashbury Hotels complex at Okehampton for this year’s WHELKS Tour.
Following an early Lunch it was off to the 1st Tee of the Pines Course, (One of Seven Courses available), for our Tour Captain to “Drive In”. The weather proved perfect for golf and a most enjoyable first round was completed without any major incidents.
The Competition then “hotted up” over the next 3 days, playing 3 different courses, where, at one stage, last year’s Tour Champion was in strong contention to retain his title but, unfortunately, he was struck down with a terrible cold & cough and was forced to withdraw from the Competition.
This meant that we were looking for a new 2015 Champion and what a hard fought contest it proved to be. Interestingly enough the two highest handicappers, Keith Evans and Derek Richards (both playing off 21 at the commencement) were placed 1st and 2nd and have had to accept that they have both been cut 1 shot, the one for known play having won on two successive days and, of course, the eventual Champion.
Congratulations to one of our 2 APGM’s, who are members of the WHELKS, W. Bro. Keith Evans, on gaining the title. (It should be noted that he has only played in 2 competitions this year and won them both!).
Thursday evening saw us hold our usual Presentation Meeting, opened with the serving of Damson Gin, where all who took part were rewarded. Even the Tour Captain awarded himself a Black Ball announcing that he was standing down after 10 plus years as Tour Captain.
Due to the inclement weather on Friday morning the decision was to return to the Midlands after breakfast at the end of what had been an excellent week of golf played in good weather throughout.
Well done to all who took part and we now look forward to our 2016 Tour with a few more players wishing to compete.
